## Before you start

- Unverified concept materials. Not construction-ready. Obtain independent qualified design and review before building.
- CAD-checked and unbuilt. No structural certification or physical-build testing is claimed.
- The house has 48 × 72 in of clear floor space. Its exterior framing is 59 1/2 × 83 1/2 in. The main run is 144 in long and 72 1/2 in between the side posts. The closed under-house void is not counted as bird space.
- The outside post frame measures 209 1/2 × 83 1/2 in (17 ft 5 1/2 in × 6 ft 11 1/2 in). The roof projects 12 in on all sides: 233 1/2 × 107 1/2 in horizontally. Allow additional clearance for the nest bank, controller, open service doors and the continuous 24 in predator apron.
- Use a level, well-drained, frost-free site with afternoon shade and access for cleaning. Place food and water in the run clear of the ramp and gate. Provide a safe work area outside the rear doors.
- The open frame uses twelve continuous 6×6 posts with cast-in MPB66Z moment bases as the connection candidate. Have the actual post, base, roof, concrete and soil design checked for the site before buying or building. Check combined gravity, uplift, lateral and moment loads, plus post deflection. The small concrete blocks in CAD locate supports; their width and depth are not footing dimensions.
- Use sound structural lumber with an appropriate species and grade. Nominal 6×6 is 5 1/2 in square, 4×4 is 3 1/2 in square, 2×6 is 1 1/2 × 5 1/2 in, and 2×4 is 1 1/2 × 3 1/2 in. Source two uninterrupted 18 ft 6×6 beams. Do not introduce a field splice inside a post cap.
- Use exterior plywood, washable cured interior finishes, and corrosion-compatible connectors and screws. Use treated wood for exposed posts, keep it above soil and standing water, and seal all cut edges. Keep birds away until finishes have cured.
- Buy the standard horizontal Omlet Smart Autodoor before making its panel. Verify the actual frame, supplied fasteners and cable. Select a metal roof with 36 in effective coverage that permits a 3:12 pitch over plywood and underlayment. Follow the selected product’s installation instructions.
- Prepare saws with guides, a drill/driver, 7 mm drill bit, countersink, clamps, square, tape, level, snips and socket tools. Use proper work platforms and enough help to lift the beams. Use eye, hearing and cut protection. Temporary erection braces stay in place until the reviewed assembly can stand safely.
- Read the dimensioned drawings, part-location schedule and cutting layouts together. Dimensions are inches unless marked mm. Measure actual stock and connectors, dry-fit one repeated joint, then cut the rest. Do not scale printed drawings. Add stock reserve for defects and end trimming; the cutting layouts include saw kerf but no end-trim reserve.
- Connection schedule: MPB66Z is the moment-base candidate for all twelve main 6×6 posts. Each includes 24 SDS 1/4×2 1/2 in screws. With concrete top z 3, wood begins z 4 and the collar reaches z 11 1/4. Follow embedment and drainage marks; the catalog anchorage zone is not a footing size. The actual concrete and reinforcement remain site-designed.
- Connection schedule: BC6Z caps fit 5 1/2 in square posts and beams. Each takes 12 specified 3/16×3 1/2 in nails into each member: 288 nails for twelve caps. Do not substitute an inverted transition cap or a beam splice. Adjust final post cuts for the actual seat thickness.
- Connection schedule: Eight LUC26Z hangers at the house posts use 80 SD9112 screws. Ten interior LUS26Z hangers add 40 SD9112 and 40 SD9212. Check header reactions and adjacent connector screw paths; install concealed hangers before the floor members.
- Connection schedule: The ripped 4×4 perimeter backing supports the floor edges beside the inset frame. Drive screws from the 1 1/2 in rim or edge joist into the 2 in backing. A proposed fixing is two staggered rows of 3 in structural screws at 12 in pitch, checked for the actual stock and site loads. Do not drive through an occupied connector hole or split the backing.
- Connection schedule: Twenty-eight H2.5AZ rafter ties use 280 SD9112 screws. Fifty-two FBR24Z rail brackets use 260 more: 32 at side rails, 12 at end rails and 8 at the plinth rails. Total scheduled SD9112 is 660, plus purchase reserve. Use the connector’s exact holes and current installation instructions.
- Connection schedule: Use compatible framing screws and angles for infill and blocking. Keep roof sheathing joints supported. For wall and roof fastening, the drawing’s baseline spacing is subject to the site wind design. Mesh, plinth panels and light connector caps are not assigned shear-wall or rigid-joint capacities.
- Connection schedule: Fix each nest support cheek through its face into the cleats. Through-bolt the wall cleats into solid nest-wall backing. Select bolt positions and lengths from the actual layered joint, keeping proper edge distances and nuts accessible.
- Connection schedule: Pack the outside halves of the Omlet retaining battens to the insert thickness so tightening cannot warp the panel. Keep the door’s bolt area and rear fasteners accessible. The landing ledger uses four 5/16 × 6 in through-bolts across the 5 in wood stack; verify nut clearance and the actual hanger positions. The landing requires connectors fitted to 1 1/2 in rails on 3 1/2 in legs; a 6×6 beam cap does not fit that joint.
- Connection schedule: Use rated exterior corner hardware for the gate and a top-hinge-to-bottom-latch tension cable. Fit hinges into reinforced timber and retain an inside latch release. Keep the gate threshold free of a crossbar.
- Connection schedule: Twelve main footings plus two gate and two landing supports require the site’s anchorage details. Small paver/support solids in CAD are location and elevation markers. This package has not been built or professionally engineered.

## Instructions

### 1. Set out the foundations

- Mark x 0,y 0 at the rear low-eave corner. Measure x toward the run gate and y toward the high eave; finished grade is z 0.
- Locate the near post faces at x 0, 54, 92, 129, 166 and 204, on both y 0 and 78. Check the 209 1/2 × 83 1/2 in outside rectangle and both diagonals.
- Build the site-designed footings and cast in the twelve MPB66Z bases using the manufacturer’s embedment marks. The coordination datum is concrete top z 3, wood bottom z 4 and collar top z 11 1/4. The steel embeds 7 1/4 in below concrete; the model omits the buried footing.
- Provide separate site-selected supports for two gate jambs and two landing legs. Set the gate threshold top at z 1/4. Reserve the full 24 in apron and door-opening space.

Check: The footprint is square, all twelve base positions match the layout, and the site-specific footing and anchorage design is complete.

### 2. Stand the house posts

- Cut two low house posts to 77 3/8 in and two high posts to 96 7/8 in from 6×6 stock. These nominal lengths ignore thin cap-seat steel: transfer final bearing elevations from the actual connectors before the final cut.
- Set the four continuous posts at x 0/54 and y 0/78 with wood bottoms at z 4. Their beam seats are nominally z 81 3/8 and z 100 7/8. Do not splice the posts at the floor.
- Install all 24 supplied SDS 1/4 × 2 1/2 in screws per MPB66Z base. Keep the standoff, drainage and inspection access open. Plumb and brace the posts temporarily in both directions.

Check: All four house posts are plumb, temporarily braced and fully fastened to the bases.

### 3. Hang the floor frame

- Fit eight LUC26Z concealed-flange hangers to the four posts before inserting timber. Two per post support the adjacent rim and edge joist. Use ten SD9112 screws per hanger, six into the post and four into the supported member. Dry-fit adjacent connectors and check screw paths.
- Set two 72 1/2 in 2×6 rims at x 2..3 1/2 and x 56..57 1/2, between y 5 1/2 and 78. Set two 48 1/2 in edge joists at y 2..3 1/2 and y 80..81 1/2, between x 5 1/2 and 54. All member bottoms are z 23 3/4.
- Hang five 52 1/2 in joists at y 15 1/4, 31 1/4, 41, 47 1/4 and 63 1/4. Use ten LUS26Z hangers: four SD9112 face screws and four SD9212 diagonal screws each.
- Fit six seam blocks centered at x 48. Rip four perimeter backing members from 4×4 to 2 × 3 1/2 in and set their tops flush at z 29 1/4. Sister them outside the rims and edge joists to support the plywood perimeter. Use the reviewed connection schedule; maintain square and level.

Check: The floor frame is square and level, with full hanger fasteners and backing at every plywood edge.

### 4. Lay the floor

- Cut 3/4 in plywood with nominal coverage 48 × 83 1/2 in and 11 1/2 × 83 1/2 in. Run the strength axis along y, across the joists. Notch the four corners around the 5 1/2 in posts and allow 1/8 in fitting clearance.
- Trim the mating x 48 edges by 1/16 in each for a 1/8 in joint over the seam blocks. Seal all faces and cut edges.
- Fasten supported edges at 6 in and intermediate joists at 12 in with the specified floor screws, subject to the site fastening schedule. Keep heads flush. Finish the z 30 floor with a washable cured coating or a secured removable liner.

Check: The finished floor is at z 30, sealed, supported and fitted around the posts with the stated gaps.

### 5. Frame the rear openings

- Fit the 2×6-depth center mullion at y 41..42 1/2 and the two header plies beginning at z 77. Preserve two 35 1/2 × 47 in cleanout openings down to the floor.
- Fit the sloped plate and upper studs from the profiles. The rear-wall depth is 5 1/2 in, matching the continuous posts. Do not add a fixed sill across the cleanout openings.
- Fix infill to posts and floor framing using the reviewed screws or compatible framing angles. Keep all hanger and cap fasteners accessible until inspected.

Check: Both rear cleanout openings measure 35 1/2 × 47 in and reach the floor without a fixed sill.

![Frame the rear openings](https://diyplans.org/media/packages/7e0dbe5e73b6be14e4170d2f6e086dd22d74111baaf2f2eb74d36e9682a50fdf/step-05/step-05.png?brand=1)

### 7. Stand the run posts

- Cut four low run posts to the nominal 77 3/8 in length and four high posts to 96 7/8 in. Transfer the final cap-seat allowance from the purchased hardware.
- Place them at x 92, 129, 166 and 204 on y 0 and 78. Set wood bottoms at z 4, install all supplied base screws and plumb each post.
- Keep the inside faces at y 5 1/2 and 78, leaving 72 1/2 in clear. The far-post near face x 204 is 144 in from the coop’s x 60 outer wall. Retain temporary bracing.

Check: All eight run posts are plumb and temporarily braced, with 72 1/2 in clear between side posts.

### 8. Fit the continuous beams

- Cut two uninterrupted 6×6 beams to 209 1/2 in from 18 ft stock. Seat them over all six posts on each side with their ends flush to the post frame.
- Fit twelve BC6Z caps. Use twelve 3/16 × 3 1/2 in connector nails into the beam and twelve into the post per cap, following the current catalog diagram. Do not put a beam splice in a cap.
- Check level, plumb and full bearing. These caps are not moment joints: the reviewed post/base/foundation system supplies lateral restraint. Remove temporary braces only at the stage permitted by that design.

Check: Both uninterrupted beams bear on six posts each; all caps and specified fasteners are installed.

### 9. Fit the rafters and blocking

- Mark the 3:12 rafter profile on one 2×6. The top-edge length is 110 13/16 in; cut from 10 ft stock using the full blank envelope in the cutting schedule.
- Cut 5 1/2 in horizontal seats at y 0..5 1/2 and y 78..83 1/2. Maximum notch depth is 1 3/8 in vertically. Test on both beams before cutting the other thirteen common rafters.
- Install the fourteen common rafters at the drawing coordinates with twenty-eight H2.5AZ ties and ten SD9112 screws per tie. Fit two unnotched barge rafters at x-12 and 220.
- Fit ladder blocks and beveled seam blocking, including the overhangs. Bring their tops into the roof plane and support every plywood joint. Use three structural framing screws at each accessible blocking end or a reviewed framing angle.

Check: Rafter seats bear fully, blocking supports every roof seam, and all 28 ties are fastened.

### 10. Sheathe the roof

- Lay 1/2 in roof plywood with the strength axis along x, across the rafters. The slope-distance rows are 0..48, 48..96 and 96..110.808 in from the low roof edge.
- Place x seams at 48, 112 and 176 over the corresponding rafters. Trim mating panel edges for 1/8 in gaps; the CAD shows nominal coverage.
- Use corrosion-compatible 1/8 × 2 1/2 in sheathing nails at the reviewed schedule. The baseline is 6 in supported edges and 12 in intermediate framing, at least 3/8 in from sheet edges.
- Check the 12 in horizontal overhangs, edge support and plane. Use suitable work platforms; the model does not establish a roof working-load rating.

Check: Roof sheets have the specified gaps and supported edges, and the 12 in overhangs match the drawings.

### 11. Weatherproof the roof

- Fit the low fascia outside the rafter ends, at y-12 3/4, and the high fascia at y95 1/2. Support both butt joints. Install underlayment and low/high eave and rake trims in the roofing manufacturer’s sequence.
- Fit seven panels with 36 in effective coverage, using 10 ft stock lengths trimmed to the slope and drip allowance. The last coverage bay is 17 1/2 in wide.
- Fit matched closures, laps, butyl tape and gasketed screws using the selected manufacturer’s pattern. The model shows coverage envelopes, not metal rib geometry.
- Direct runoff away from the doors, apron and bases. Fit a low-eave gutter if needed to keep the run dry.

Check: The roofing, closures and flashing follow the chosen product instructions and drain away from the coop.

### 12. Close the walls and lower skirt

- Dry-fit the wall panels and openings, including front siding reliefs where the beams pass through. Split each side at z 63 3/4 over backing; leave fitting gaps and flash the horizontal seam. The low wall has no service hatch.
- Screw siding to framing at the reviewed schedule, using the 6 in edge/12 in field baseline where applicable. Seal edges and flash above cleanouts, nest box and vents. Fit removable lower-wall interior liners with flush screws.
- Stop the low-side siding at z85 3/8 under the rafter tails. Rout 1/2 in-deep back pockets at the base collars, leaving 1/4 in outer skin. Keep pockets open at the bottom, dry-fit over the actual screw heads and preserve drainage. Cut the front reliefs for the landing ledger and side rails. Fit the four removable plywood plinth panels around the under-house void, z 4..29 1/4. Install their lower rails at z 13, above the base collars. Use accessible screws so each base and the floor framing can be inspected.
- Clamp 1/2 in welded hardware cloth over both vents with screw-fixed battens. Add downward-facing rain hoods. Keep both 44 ×14 in openings available: 8.56 sq ft combined gross area, reduced by mesh and hoods. Check heat and ventilation during use.

Check: Walls and removable skirt fit the base collars; both permanent vents remain open behind secured mesh.

### 13. Build the nest bank

- Attach the two wall cleats through the backing below the nest ports. Fit the solid plywood support cheeks and the horizontal floor cleats with face fasteners. Keep screw tips inside the timber; do not rely on fasteners driven into plywood edges.
- Fit the 31 ×15 1/4 in floor with its top at z 42. Fit the outer side panels and two touching 3/4 in divider panels to leave two 14 in-wide bays.
- Cut side and divider tops to the profile, dropping 1 1/4 in across 15 1/4 in. Fit the fixed sloping lid and the lower front lip. Seal all edges and joints.
- Waterproof the lid and flash its wall joint. Keep entrances smooth. Add clean bedding after finishes cure.

Check: Both nest bays fit the ports, and support cheeks, cleats and reinforcement are fully fixed.

### 14. Hang the egg hatch

- Fit the 31 1/2 × 13 in egg hatch using two bottom-edge hinges and two positive top latches. Add reinforcement where the selected hinges require it.
- Fit weatherstrip and two support chains. Adjust chain length so the open hatch rests below the nest lip without loading its hinges as stops.
- Check the full swing, lid clearance, latches and covered fastener tips before use.

Check: The egg hatch swings freely, is supported when open, and closes against its seals and two latches.

### 15. Fit the roosts and trays

- Assemble two 48 in roost rails on four 18 3/4 in legs. Fit the cross tie and four 6 in plywood gussets; keep the fasteners accessible for disassembly.
- Fit two 51 in 2×3 perches with the 2 1/2 in face horizontal, their centerlines 18 in apart and tops at z 52 3/4. Round the upper edges and retain them with removable screws.
- Make two 36 ×34 in trays from 1/2 in plywood and 1×2 rims. Seal them, fit removable liners and place them beneath the perches.
- Practice cleaning: remove the perches and disassemble rails as needed, then slide each tray through its matching 35 1/2 in opening. The complete roost bench does not fit through a cleanout door. Reassemble and tighten after cleaning.

Check: The perches are secure and both droppings trays can be removed through the cleanout openings.

### 17. Enclose the run

- Fit side rails at z 13 and 43, with FBR24Z brackets at each end. Keep the attachments clear of the moment-base collars. The rails sit on the outer framing faces to support mesh and battens.
- Cover each bay with 1/2 in galvanized welded hardware cloth. Continue it to grade and close every roofline gap. Clamp all edges with 1×2 battens and exterior screws; fit backing under any field seam.
- At each base, cut and fold mesh around the actual concrete and collar. Clamp it to accessible timber above the steel, overlap and secure it to the apron below, and keep openings no larger than 1/2 in. Do not drill extra holes in the base or seal its drainage. Keep the removable plinth access usable.
- Lay a continuous 24 in outward apron around the enclosure, including beneath the gate. Overlap mesh joints at least 2 in, secure corners, pin and cover with soil or gravel. Adjust to the actual ground.
- Cover sharp edges and inspect the complete boundary. Select mesh gauge and fixing strength for local predators; do not leave gaps beneath rails or around roof members.

Check: All run mesh edges are clamped, gaps are closed, and the continuous 24 in outward apron is secured.

### 18. Hang the run gate

- Set jamb inner faces at y 26 and 58 for a 32 in opening; fit the header at z 78 1/2. Anchor these auxiliary posts with the site-selected supports.
- Build the 31 1/2 ×77 3/4 in leaf using fitted 2×4 rails and stiles with exterior gate corner hardware. Fit a thin anti-sag cable from the TOP HINGE corner to the BOTTOM LATCH corner; tension it just enough to square the leaf.
- Clamp mesh to the outside face. Hang on three exterior hinges to swing outward. Maintain about 1/4 in gaps at both sides, the head and threshold.
- Fit stops and a two-action latch with inside release and an animal-resistant clip. Close the end mesh and the area above the gate.
- Check full swing and ground clearance. Recheck the threshold after settlement. The gate cable supports the gate only and does not brace the timber structure.

Check: The gate swings without sag, clears the threshold, and the latch can be released from inside.

### 19. Install the Omlet door and ramp

- Cut the nominal 32 ×24 in, 3/4 in insert. Mark a 200 ×300 mm cutout 6 in from its low-y edge and 4 in above the bottom. Seal and gasket the panel behind the removable retaining battens.
- Place the actual horizontal Omlet frame with its leaf parking toward high y. Leave at least 5 mm beside the safety bar. Transfer all four mounting holes from the unit, drill 7 mm, and fit the supplied M6×70 bolts, rear plates and wingnuts through the insert only. Keep rear nut access.
- Fit the removable interior step and sill bridge at z 34. Through-bolt the ledger through the perimeter backing and floor rim with four 5/16 × 6 in bolts and washers. Dry-fit the nominal centers y34 1/2,36,37 1/2,39 at z27 1/2 clear of hanger metal; verify the site connection and actual bolt length. Build the landing supports, risers and two outside legs. Keep the 16 in-wide landing at x 63 1/4..72 3/4, beyond the 55 mm door projection. Select the reviewed retaining hardware for the rail-to-leg joints.
- Build the ramp on two 2×4 stringers, from x 72 3/4,z 34 to x 132 3/4,z 4. Cut the sloped deck 67 1/16 in long and fit ten 16 in cleats at 6 in spacing along it. Saw the upper deck and stringer ends plumb at x72 3/4 to clear the landing. Scribe the toe bearing to the level paver.
- Mount the controller on its exterior stand-off pad with natural daylight for light mode. Check the protected route, service slack and drip loop against the supplied 2 m cable before fixing the pad; move it closer if necessary. Do not stretch or splice the cable.
- Follow Omlet’s setup and obstruction tests. Check manual release, track clearance and the flock’s return time before enabling its closing schedule.

Check: The Omlet door passes its manufacturer obstruction/manual-release tests, and the landing and ramp clear its operating space.

### 20. Fit the camera pads

- Seal two 6 ×6 ×3/4 in plywood pads. Fix the interior pad to inner rear header and the far-run pad directly to the inside-facing surface of the high end post. Use four exterior screws into solid wood (interior screw elevations must fall within z77..82 1/2), leaving the middle free for camera hardware.
- Use the interior position to look across the perches and floor toward the bird door. Use the run position to look diagonally back at the Omlet door, landing and run.
- Check the actual camera view before drilling bracket holes. Allow room to adjust and remove the camera. Install bracket hardware only after confirming the camera and its mounting pattern.

Check: Both camera pads are fixed to solid wood and their intended views cover the perches and door/run.

### 21. Check the finished coop

- Check all bearings, connector fasteners, bases, latches and hinges against the drawings and the reviewed site design. Remove temporary braces only when permitted. Cover sharp mesh and hardware.
- Operate every door with bedding in place. Check the Omlet track, safety bar, controller access and manual release. Check the run latch from inside.
- Wet the roof and flashing from above and correct leaks or standing water. Keep both permanent vents clear. Check the intended views at both camera pads.
- Inspect birds, feed, water, door operation and the enclosure daily. Recheck mesh, ground gaps, roof seals, timber and connector corrosion periodically and after severe weather. Remove the plinth panels for base inspections.

Check: All final inspections and movement tests pass; the daily inspection routine is established.

## Using the CAD files

- Open the FCStd in FreeCAD; the solid geometry is stored in millimeters. The part manifest and location schedules use inches.
- Use STEP for solid exchange. Product hardware and concrete shapes are coordination envelopes, not approved connection or footing designs.
- The offline source/geometry.json and source/rebuild.py reproduce the modeled assembly. Rebuild in a copy, then regenerate and review drawings and schedules after design changes.
